Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Dr. Sci. (Geology and Mineralogy) (Novosibirsk, Russia).
Research interests: mineralogy and geochemistry of kimberlites and lithospheric mantle, geology of diamond deposits and methods of forecasting and prospecting.
PhD thesis: Mineralogy and petrology of the xenoliths of deep ultramafic rocks in kimberlites of Daldino-Alakitskiy district, Yakutia.
Doctoral dissertation: Mantle parageneses in kimberlites: their origin and search value.
Nikolay P. Pokhilenko has shown that the nature and intensity of the metasomatic transformations of the lithospheric mantle’s root parts, associated with the lower mantle superplumes, have a decisive effect on the diamond content of kimberlites of different ages. On the basis of a comprehensive study of kimberlites and diamonds in the southern Slave craton, he was the first to obtain data that directly indicate the existence of super-thick (> 300 km) lithosphere blocks within the ancient platforms.
Co-author of a complex of mineralogical and geochemical methods for prospecting and evaluating diamondiferous kimberlites, which contributed to the discovery of a number of deposits in Yakutia.
Co-author of the forecast and participant in the discovery of the Arkhangelsk diamond province, the discoverer of the world-class diamond deposit Snap Lake (Canada).
He is the author of the confirmed forecast of a new diamond province in the lower part of the River Mackenzie basin (Canada).
Author and co-author of about 300 scientific papers, 4 monographs and 4 copyright certificates.
Membership: Board of Directors of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, SB RAS Presidium Commission (Roads, Public Transport and Land Improvement of the NSC SB RAS), Commission on Housing Construction of the NSC SB RAS, Expert Commission of the RF President's Foundation for State Support of Leading Scientific Schools and Young Scientists, Cooperation of the SB RAS and the Trans-Baikal Territory, Council for the Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), American Geophysical Union, Association of Search Engines and Industrialists of Canada.
